In response to evolving needs, Graham Medical launched two new MegaMover® patient transport products to expedite the recovery and rescue of victims during mass casualty and active shooter incidents. These portable units were developed in collaboration with EMS personnel from fire stations in Wisconsin. Their design is based on first-hand experience of incidents where victim recovery was required under dangerous conditions. These products will be on display at the EMS World Expo 2018 in Nashville, TN, from October 29 to November 2.
New Tactical MegaMover®
Rescue of victims during mass shooting or coordinated terrorist incidents is difficult because of the ongoing risks in such volatile situations.
The Tactical MegaMover® was developed specifically for these applications. Fire Chief Joe Pulvermacher from Fitchburg, WI, who had experienced two mass shooting incidents, came up with the initial concept. He approached Graham Medical for help, and working together, they developed a solution that was practical and effective. Key features of the Tactical MegaMover® include:
- Can be used to drag or carry victims
- Strong, rugged, compact and light
- Center cross-strap to secure victims
- Three long pull/carry straps at either end
- For use by one or two responders
- Can be worn on the person of the rescuer
New Disaster Response MegaMover®
In mass casualty incidents, the number of victims typically exceeds the respondents, creating a major challenge when it comes to patient extraction.
We at Graham Medical were already working on a disaster response patient transport unit and asked Captain Michael Wright of the Milwaukee Fire department to evaluate a prototype. Captain Wright has extensive training experience and presented a mass casualty seminar in Las Vegas just after the 2017 concert massacre there. So he fully understands the practical difficulties EMS personnel face in a mass casualty incident. Working together we developed the Disaster Response MegaMover®, which is
- Compact in size
- Provides a cocoon-like wrap to protect patients
- Equipped with an under-arm chest-strap
- Fitted with two drag straps at the head end
- Marked for HEAD and FOOT positioning
- Supplied with eight multi-position handholds for carrying patients when possible
- Usable by two- to eight-man teams
Practical Demonstration During Complex Coordinated Terrorist Attack Seminar at EMS World Expo 2018
Captain Wright is leading a workshop on Complex Coordinated Terrorist Attacks that will have both a theoretical and practical component. During this seminar, which takes place on Monday October 29, he will discuss the technicalities of the Unified Command Structure during an active shooter situation as well as the characteristics of Complex Coordinated Terrorist Attacks.
During the practical exercise and drill that follows, participants will have the opportunity to see the new Tactical MegaMover® and Disaster Response MegaMover® products in action and use them.
