Comfort-considerations-geriatric-ems-transport.jpgAs you are no doubt already aware, geriatric patients are making up an increasing portion of your EMS call. This is due to both age-related illness and an aging Baby Boomer population. A retrospective study of EMS transports to EDs in the state of NC in 2007 showed that patients aged 65 and older accounted for over 38% of all patient transports to the emergency department and is projected to increase to nearly 50% by 2030. It makes sense, then, that EMS providers understand the specialized needs for geriatric comfort.

Frailty Due to Age and Illness

Senior patients are often more fragile than younger adult victims. This age-related frailty is demonstrated by "low grip strength, low energy, slowed waking speed, low physical activity, and/or unintentional weight loss." Weight loss may be associated with decreased body fat and a reduced ability to retain body heat.

Knowing that these patients may not have the resilience of other adults, means that all possible means must be employed to keep them safe and comfortable during transport.

This JEMS article from a few years ago does a good job of outlining various considerations when transporting elderly patients. One thing in particular that it addresses is that of assuring comfort. In this regard, the article states, "Pillows and blankets are valuable tools providers can use to adjust elderly patients."

Graham Medical manufactures a number of different types of medical blankets that EMS providers should keep in mind to have available for these senior citizens.

  • Polyester Blankets - The Comfort1® Blanket is a single-use high-quality polyester blanket providing protection from stains, tears, cross-contamination and infection. Made in the USA, it can be placed in warmers up to 150º F to provide additional warmth and comes in a Quality (Gray) or Elite (White) model.
  • Fleece Blankets - A heavier option, the Comfort1® Fleece Blanket (blue) is also a single-use blanket which provides additional softness, can also be pre-warmed up to150º F and can be sent home with the patient.
  • Poly/Tissue Blankets - These yellow and white, single-use Visiblanket® styles are lightweight, yet provide protection from the elements and identify priority or fall risk patients. They come in three different models.
  • Mylar Blankets - These chrome colored Hypothermia Blankets are lightweight, weather resistant and easy to pack. They provide quick passive warming and stand up well to rain or snow. In addition, the ultra-light weight can be advantageous to avoid adding additional pressure to strains or other injuries.
Timely and thoughtful use of EMS blankets can ease the stress and strain of the elderly patient while pre-hospital care is given and transportation is provided.
